  • By Daiemah Malik

  1. Hear what books say not hearsay

In this era of technology, follow the three R’s before forming firm and rigid opinions based on unverifiable and often prejudice-based information.

The 3Rs are-

  • Read;
  • Research;
  • And Re-educate yourself.

  1. Face the Phase

Learn what Prejudice behavior is and how a person who has learned such a behavior acts. It’s not a phase that the person is going through, people develop a prejudiced personality by learning it and the only way to break through such cycles is to unlearn such detrimental and stereotypical thought processes.

  1. Check before you wreck

Words can kill, literally. Your Freedom to Expression shouldn’t deter the existence of another human.  Think and Check what you speak and the vocabulary you use to refer to people. Offensive terminology must not be used at all times as it causes both mental and psychological Trauma to the victim and cultivates the culture of abuse. Incitement is a separate crime, according to both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). It also falls under Article 25 [Individual Criminal Responsibility] of the Rome Statute.

  1. The mystery of history

In the words of Gregory Stanton, “One of the best predictors of genocide is incitement to genocide."

In order to develop empathy and insight, learn how historically incitement has proved to be predictor of Genocide and understand ‘the pattern’. Books like ‘Mein Kampf’ by Adolf Hitler were one of the causes of the Second World War and the massive killing of Jews.

  1. Erase Euphemisms

According to William Schabas, "The history of genocide shows that those who incite the crime speak in euphemisms."

Euphemisms and metaphors are one of the skillsets of an inciter. Learn and educate your immediate circle about how such offenders master metaphors to influence the masses and break the cycle.

  1. Cheer your Peer

 Build a strong and uplifting reference group and act together on things that matter.

  1. Join hands with the out-group

Communicate and learn about the culture and practices of out-group and rise above stereotypes that delimit the existence of people.

  1. Handpick your radio to empathy

Media plays a crucial role in shaping one’s opinion. Throughout history, instances where problematic Media incited genocide are innumerous, be it Julius Streicher’s Publication that incited the Holocaust or the pro-genocide media that incited the Rwandan Genocide which was later referred to as "radio genocide", "death by radio" and "the soundtrack to genocide".

So, before you read that newspaper, know that it is highly influenced by the author’s personal opinion which may not always be correct.

  1. React and Report

Report incitement the moment you witness it and save lives. Influence Change and amend laws that are used as covers to hate.
